DUBIEL TAKES EARLY LEAD AT AMATEUR

QUECHEE, Vermont – After a substantial rainy start to the 90th New England Amateur Championship, the first round concluded with nothing but sun in the sky above the beautiful Highland Course at The Quechee Club.

On this day in Quechee, a total of 144 competitors representing all six of the New England Golf Association states begun competing for a chance to hoist the Harry B. McCracken trophy awarded to the low amateur at the conclusion of the championship proper.
The 6800-yard layout in Quechee proved to be a challenge for the field of 144 competitors as only eleven were able to post an under-par round.
Sitting in the club house as leader with a 5-under par 67 after the conclusion of round one,is current collegiate golfer at Cornell University, Charlie Dubiel. Opening his play on Quechee’s back-nine Tuesday morning, the former Phillip Exeter standout Dubiel carded par on each of his first four holes before carding his first birdie of the day on the par-5 14th hole. After a setback on the subsequent 15th hole that saw him move back to even, Dubiel rebounded with a second birdie on the par-4 16th hole to move back to under par for the round – a position he would hold for the remainder of the round.
After making the turn at 1-under, Dubiel tallied an additional four birdies on his second nine to continue building on his lead, including on the par-5 second and fifth holes, the par-3 eighth hole and the par-4 ninth hole, respectively.
Dubiel joins Christopher Sirrell (Kingswood GC – NH), and Peter Boston (George Wright – MA) tomorrow at 1:07 PM off the first tee.
For the state of Rhode Island, Jeffrey Girgure (Wannamoisett CC – RI) lead the way for the competitors in the Ocean State, with a score of four under score of 68. Giguere, of Providence, Rhode Island and a rising senior on the Middlebury College men’s golf team, registered six birdies to two bogeys to finish his first round at 4-under 68, including a streak of four straight birdies from Holes 3-6 on the Highland course.. Girgure joins two other competitors (Bobby Leopold – Wannamoisett CC – RI & Tyler Cooke – Wannamoisett CC – RI) amongst the top 10 on the leaderboard.
Jason Liu (CSGA Club For Schools – CT) was the medalist for the state of Connecticut, with a carded two under score of 70. The highlight of the day for Liu was an eagle on the par 5 fifth hole of the highland course. The 500-yard and twelve hardest hole was no tough test for the Constitution State native, as he confidently carded a 3.
For the hosting state of Vermont, Bryson Richards (CC of Barre – VT) was the low score for the Green Mountain state. The 18-year old’s two under score of 70 earned him a tied for sixth spot, going into the second round of the championship proper tomorrow.
Caleb Manuel (Brunswick GC – ME) earned himself the medalist for on the day for the state of Maine, with a one under par score of 71. Along with Liu, Manuel was able to card an eagle on the fifth hole of the highland course. Liu and Manuel were two out of three total carded eagles on the day.
