Kearney, Szewczul Crowned 2019 New England Senior Amateur Champions
SACO, Maine – At the conclusion of the 22nd New England Senior Amateur Championship, two men remained atop of the leaderboard. Round 1 leader Bob Kearney (The Shattuck GC – NH) was able to remain leader throughout Round 2, after posting a score of 3-over par round of 74, resulting in a two-round total of 1-over par.
“Yesterday I hit the ball really well”, said Kearney. “I hit the ball close all day so I was hoping I could replicate that. It was a little bit more of a struggle today.”
After a windy first round to the Championship proper, mother nature did not let up, as the wind remained consistent and arguably got worse through the rest of the Round 2.
“I thought the course played harder with the cool breeze”, said Kearney. “It was a grind to get around today, but I putted better today than I have putted in a while and that made a difference today.”
Over the course of Round 2, Kearney kept his game quite consistent, as he carded eleven pars, two birdies and just four bogies.
When asked if there were any key holes during Round 2 that contributed to him winning the Championship proper, Kearney stated hole fifteen made a big difference in his round.
“Fifteen the little par three where I was about fifteen feet above the hole, and I had a real fast left to right putt”, said Kearney. “I made it for birdie and recovered from bogey on the previous hole.”
At one point in his golfing career, Bob Kearney achieved what many people dream of being known as, a top-ranked amateur golfer in the country. In 2015, Kearney was the top-ranked senior amateur golfer in the United States. Despite having this achievement, Kearney stated that winning the New England Senior Amateur Championship is something that is a pleasing feeling.
“It feels great to win”, said Kearney. “I grew up in Connecticut and I’m not sure I’ve ever won a golf tournament in New England until today, so I’m pretty pleased with that.”
Joining Kearney atop of the leaderboard winning the Super Senior division, was Dave Szewczul (Tunxis CC – CT). For Szewczul, this is his third time winning the Championship proper, winning the tournament previously in 2010 and 2011.
Similar to Kearney, Szewczul remained consistent throughout Round 2. He carded a total of 15 pars, 1 birdie, and just 1 bogey and 1 double bogey.
