2018 New England Amateur Championship Field Now Set After Final Qualifier Held at Orange Hills CC (CT)

Orange, Connecticut – The fourth and final day of qualifying was held on Tuesday at Orange Hills Country Club to determine the field for the 2018 New England Amateur Championship, which will be contested on July 17-19 at Portland Country Club in Portland, Maine.

On this day in Orange, a total of nine competitors representing four of six New England Golf Association states advanced to the Championship Proper following an 18-hole qualifier where the cut line fell at 3-over par 73. Those nine competitors have earned a spot at next month's Championship, while four additional players finished as alternates and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the New England Golf Association Policies and Procedures Page.
The 6,500-yard layout in Orange proved to be a challenge for the field of more than 80 competitors as only one competitor - Michael Vanderlaan of the Eclub of CT - was able to post an under-par round.
Vanderlaan, a rising senior on the Florida Southern College men's golf team, finished with a score of 3-under par 68 and capped off his round by making birdie on five of his last seven holes. Four years ago, Vanderlaan's older brother John, who was also a member of the Moccasin men’s golf team this past season, won the 2014 New England Amateur Championship at Winchester Country Club in Winchester, Massachusetts.
Finishing second overall after posting a score of even par 71 was Drew Brennan (Ellington Ridge CC - CT), who played the Orange Hills CC's back nine at 3-under par 33. Will Hall (Wanumetonomy G&CC - RI) and Alexander Ensign (The International - MA) were one and two strokes back of Brennan, respectively. A total of five competitors turned in scores of 3-over par 74 to secure their qualifying spots.
